Chlorofluorocarbons have become a popular consumer product eventhough they present a danger because they have good refrigeranting properties(R-12,R-22) and they are non toxic and non corrosive. No more complex equipment in refrigerating system. Also now-a-days byproduct R-23 which is responsible for depletetion of ozone layer is money earner by burning it through themal oxidiser you can sell carbon credits. Our firm awarded 1000 crores rupees ny Noble,Singapur AGAINST THE ANNUAL TURN-OVER OF RS.150 Crores.
further more they are good propellent, foaming agent and raw material for PTFE which is one of the best engineering plastic.

That's just the way humans are. Some legislation has placed restrictions on certain CFCs. You should check out Wikipedia or something to get an idea of all the uses of chlorofluorocarbons, it's a good read. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chlorofluorocarbons

They are largely phased out in aerosols and new refrigeration or airconditioning applications. They are still used in old equipment and the authorites are trying to see that the CFC is disposed of safely when they come to the end of their life. I believe there is a substitute which is non flammable but it is expensive. Redesign of fridges has led to smaller refrigerant inventories and cheap but flammable propane is considered safe. Propane is now commonly used in aerosols.
