I want to major in either biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, or bioengineering. Out of Yale, Cornell, UC Berkeley, and Johns Hopkins, which has the strongest programs in these majors and where should I apply to early?
Any additional info about financial aid and such or if you're attending one of these universities, feel free to add.
Thanks.

Choose your best answer wisely ... did any of these answerers actually go to those schools? Did any of them study your field of interest?

I was a molecular biology student at UC Berkeley. Class of 2002. I will say with fervor and conviction that UC Berkeley has EXCELLENT biology programs. You will be under the tutelage of the best and brightest minds, the men and women who are on the vanguard of the field.

One of my biochemistry professors worked under Francis Crick (y'know, Watson and Crick, those guys who figured out the structure of DNA). Another professor is in line to get the Nobel very soon, or so they say. He's a brilliant guy who does fascinating research on yeast. And the rest of my professors have plenty of publications to their credit. I can honestly say, only one of them was a real a**hole (but apparently he's a big wig in his own right, which is how he got tenure).

The advantage that Cal Berkeley has over those other schools is that it's a PUBLIC university. That means if you are a CA resident, you pay a whole lot less in tuition and fees than at those other schools. It only takes one year to establish CA residency. Even out-of-state tuition is lower at Cal than at Hopkins, Yale and Cornell.

And Cornell? God, Ithaca is NOWHERE! Prepared to be bored to tears. Berkeley is a happening town. It's a 20 minute BART ride under the Bay to SF. There is always something going on. And it doesn't snow out there. The weather is nice and mild. Baltimore just plain sucks. And Yale? Uggh, stuck up rich kids!

Come on, you know you want to. Choose UC Berkeley. You will be glad you did.

I think Johns Hopkins is the best for the major you want to go into. It is rated the second highest behind Harvard in medicine related fields.

For your specific major, I'd pick Johns Hopkins.

For undergraduate? Any one of them. For graduate, I would go for Hopkins.
