I lived in Japan for three years. I was through quite a lot of earthquakes. One almost every night. and several during the day. they were just tiny tremors and not at all scary (to be honest, kind of fun). Now when we first moved there we had a 8.0 and it was horrifying. it caused a small Tsunami and a huge oil spill. But we learned all the safety tips and we made it out alive.

yes a very bad one in 1989. My cat darted under the bed and almost a minute later the house started rocking back and forth. Dishes fell out of the cabinet my dresser fell over everything got pushed around. I heard on the news (on a battery powered radio) that bridges actually fell and that cars were squashed and people and animals had died, it was horrible.
