Phobias come from natural survival reactions. Have you ever thought about this - most phobias (at least the most known) are about things or animals that are potentially harmful? So it really is a natural reaction, that simply comes in different levels of intensity.

When it comes to cocroaches, they are not on the top-10 list of dangerous animals to be feared. But they have a lot in common with some animals that can either be venomous or carry with them sickness.

What makes cocroaches even worse is that they come inside the house - and inside the most private rooms, where you want it to be clean (kitchen, bedroom, shower). And like my mother used to tell me from her childhood; "They came crawling on the roof, and when you turned the light on, the dropped down in your bed."
A story like that, and you might be scarred for life ;)

so there you have it - they are assosiated with fear, sickness, pain and intrusion. And the fact that creatures like this are often used in horror movies, only escalates these feelings of fear or disgust. So media is an important factor - if a person has never heard of cocroaches, they will probably not even notice it more than any other bug.

It's mostly social learning + a little instincts.

And don't say that ladies are afraid of them - there are guys as well =)

Hope that was logical enough for ya!

Personally cockroaches terrify me. Where I come from, they are a sign of filth. They carry germs and just plain suck. however,I found out the hard way after I lived in a southern state that no matter how clean your home was.. they were everywhere! Even calling the exterminators wasn't a permanent solution. I moved back up north. They are the most repulsive creatures just for what they signify.

I don't know about psychological, but besides being very ugly, they move entirely too fast (six legs come in handy), and most of the time, it's towards the people who want it to get away from them :P

There is no logical reason. They are faking in my opinion. Let
the bug lie there & see if they don't figure out what to do. They
will either throw a shoe at it or try to kill it. At the very minimum
they will keep an eye out for which direction it went. It's all BS.

Im sure its not that they are actually scared of them , more they just purely dont like them.

The reason I would say would be because , they look horrible, and most ladies arent into creepy crawly things anyways.

Because they can live for a week with no head until they finally starve to death. They are the only creature that can survive a nuclear war. That makes me fear them :)

I hate cochroaches but if I see one I kill it cause they make thousands of babies...but I have to have a spraycan nearby. They are creepy, crawly and are old...millions of years old, and if the world blows up, they will still survive - thats gross!

It's probably cultural, related to the fact that they are taught that roaches are "scary" from a young age.
