I have always dreamed of moving to like the absolute middle of nowhere and building a small wooden cabin, and just living there---never shaving so I grow a long beard, and hunting for my food with a shotgun--like people you see in the movies like tom hanks in castaway except I'll voluntarily stay as opposed to being stuck there. Anyone else ever dream of doing that. I'm 18 but I think once I make enough money I'll head off when I'm like 39 years old, and just live in the wilderness for the remainder of my life, maybe returning after like 25 years to see how the world has changed.

Yes you seem to share my long cherished dream. I think that in my 45 years, (25 as a Senior Lawyer) I have seen and experienced everything, and would like to see real solitude before the end of my days. I wish we are both successful in our endeavors.

Yes, but I have family responsibilities that prevented it. As for you, why wait till you are 39 after you have made some money?? If you truly want to live a life of isolation and in the wilderness where you hunt and grow your own food, why do you need money. Go now while you have the dream. Your youth will stand you in good stead rather than being 39 when you may not be as agile and/or strong.

Good Luck!!!

I think about doing that quite often, but I'm too scared to actually do it. When I go hiking or drive up to the mountains, I look around me and just feel like that's where I belong.
Remember though, it isn't as easy as it was a hundred years ago. Even if you're living off the land, you'd still have to pay taxes, and eventually you'd have to get some new clothes and tools, and there aren't as many resources as the native americans had. But I guess if you saved up a nice sum of money, you could live that way for a while.
Things just aren't as simple as they used to be.

I thought about that before, cuz the world is so um, worldly. Just opting out, like taking my hubby and raising kids away from all the evil, like on a tropical island big enough to survive a hurricane or tsunami, but deserted, and full of food and clean water. But then I watched the movie, The Village, and decided I'd rather deal with evil among air conditioning, hospitals, coffee and chocolate. Yeah.

That's amazing. I don't think ANYONE else ever dreamed that. You're half way to Shangri La, temporarily in LaLa Land. No need to worry any longer though. There will not be any wilderness left that can be inhabited in 25 years. The term is called expansion. It's coming to all neighborhoods near you. By the way, how much does a 25 year supply of shot-gun shells weigh? Bcnya.

Yes. I want to, just to getaway from materialism and society. I'd like to learn how to hunt by bow and arrow and smoke/cure meat and fish and how to gather edible fruits and vegetables in the wild. Of course, I'd like to have a very stable cabin built, and I'd like to possess a few high-powered rifles with scopes and a few handguns...just in case.

I love your idea!! It's been mine too for a while. I thought I was the only one.

i have also thought of that. many times. i recently returned from a year long backpacking trip (log cabin= backpack) and that has further enforced my want/need to get out of this society. you should try different countries- you may find one that works with you where you still get to socialise with people around you. otherwise, perhaps you are logcabin ing it bc you want to get away from ALL people. if that is the case, well, more power to you!!

Yes, everyday I wish I could do that. It is the way it was meant to be, before greed and power infected the world.
