NOT AT ALL. Especially if its a non-violent/minor offence. When offences committed by children are violent it usually intersects wiht some other problem either socially or psychological. Thus the child needs to be assessed. Evaluate home life- which has a major influence in development and conduct, perhaps the home life is causing a negative impact. But when the offence is non-violent other measures can be taken to hold child accountable not detaining them. Detaining can have a further negative impact, detrimental to their personal development. Labelling children as bad or criminals can make them live up to that role and not care to change but act as what they are believed to be;

I once worked for the Juvenile court system in my local area and yes. Many people are under the illusion that little Jimmy and Michelle do not belong in the juvenile system.

The youth home is packed with little budding criminals. There wouldn't be a need for juvenile detention centers if mommy and daddy raised their children correctly.

On the other hand, there are some children in detention centers because their parents have given up on them. While the parents' parental rights are being terminated, little Jimmy or Michelle must remain in the detention centers until foster homes can be located.

I think it is a good idea, in hopes that this may be a chance to rehabilitize the child before they get too old. Hopefully they can get these problems out of their system and become a productive member of society.

Where would you put a murderer? Juvenile detention is much better than Adult facilities. At least in Juvenile Hall, the most that's gonna hapen is they get beaten and raped. In adult prisons, these boys would be plucking their eyebrows after a while.
