My gold fish sits at the top of of the water in the tank...and sits still. When I go over to the tank he then swims around. I have checked the ammonia levels in the tank and they are normal and he eats fine.

His backend tends to not stay down too...looks like he is having a hard time staying down near the gravel.

Goldfish are one of the few fish that fall into the catagory of "surface breathers".

This means that they will go to the surface and actually gulp air. They do this when th oxygen levels in the water are low.

Other fish that do this include some catfish and Betta fish.

Do you have an airpump or filter on the tank.

This is usually a sign of low oxygen levels.

Check the water temperature remember goldfish are fish from warn water. When water is cold they go down and stay calm and most of the time they get sick with ick.
The proper water temperature should be 78F
Hope this may help.

When I first saw the title, I was going to say it was dead. But then I read the rest of it. Maybe it is waiting for more food. Some goldfish can be hogs. They will eat 'til they burst.

Perhaps the oxygen level is a bit low or if you have the habit of sprinkling his food on the surface he is waiting for you to feed him - which is after all is the highlight of his day!
