I am not quite sure what z strips are and where I can buy them. All I know is they are to be placed behind the outside molding of my window to prevent leaks.

Z strips are metal flashing that can be purchased at building supply stores such as Home Depot. Install them under your siding above windows and doors. You may need to remove some of your siding or the trim around your windows to do this. Good Luck to you!

DrD has correctly identified the product, which is usually referred to as z-flashing, because of the zig-zag profile of the metal which fits under the siding and over the window. However:

In my experience, a metal flashing is not your best answer for leak protection. A wind-driven rain does not follow the laws of gravity and can easily bi-pass your flashing.

The answer is polyurethane caulk, available at Home Depot for $4.50 a tube. I like O.S.I. Pro-Series (white) which stays flexible, and if you apply it to a nice clean surface and work it in with your finger, it can be a lifetime application.
