I have been with the company for 2 years this October. I received a raise after just a few months here, and last October I was promised another one shortly. I am struggling to pay bills, childcare, etc., and could really use a raise right now. I was always just given them at the right times, and this is the first time I feel like I need to talk to my boss and I do not know how to approach him.

first do you deserve a raise? if yes then just ask to speak with your boss, do not go in and say "hey where's my raise", just talk to him or her and explain that you have been struggling with some agmented charges of late, daycare utility etc. be nice not pushy.
i happen to be a boss and i enjoy listening to my staff when it come to giving raises, you should not have a problem.there is another method but try that first.

Keep track of the things you do right, and which make you an asset. Write down when you do anything praiseworthy, compliments you've gotten on your work, and who gave them. Then set up a time to meet with your boss, so you won't be interrupted. Go over these with him, and show him why you deserve a raise, not just that you want one. He may not be impressed by the fact that you need the money, but he will be if you're making the company look good, and doing good work.

Go in prepared. Make a list of all the ways you have improved on the job and projects you have been part of.
If he asks why you're bringing it up, be honest and tell him your living expenses are higher now and it's a struggle to make ends meet.
But be careful! We just got raises last month in our workplace and now some folks are taking home less money because their raise put them into the next higher tax bracket.

You need to show your boss that you deserve it. Point out all the productive things you have done since you've been there and what an asset you are to the company.
Do not whine about your money problems-that won't help.

tell your boss the situation that you had, some employer will give you a raise, if you talk to them.
