Probably Australia at the moment. Some people do feed statistics into a computer and trot out an answer, but it leaves a good deal to be desired.

South Africa may have been on top but have returned home after losing two test matches to Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka may not have cricket for some time to come, what with with rain and civil unrest.

Pakistan fared disastrouly against England in two test matches but is currently doing well in the third.

The West Indies have faded badly - in the last fifteen years! That leaves India, New Zealand, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. None of them is in contention.

Note that I have spoken only of Test Cricket, not the one day version.

Really, this is as silly as asking "Who's the greatest musician? (Bach, Beethoven, Beatles or Britney?)" or "Who's the greatest writer? (Homer, Valmiki, Shakespeare, Guenter Grass or Patience Strong?)"

Good luck

Indian cricket team has become the most valued brand globally across all sports in terms of sponsorship revenues, pushing Italian football club Juventus to the second place. Indian cricket team achieved the feat after BCCI today awarded global sports accessories major Nike with official kits sponsorship for Rs 196.66 crore and recently gave the rights for displaying logo on chest and leading arm of player's shirts to Air Sahara for Rs 313 crore.
The Australian cricket team, together with the English cricket team, are the oldest teams in Test cricket having played its first Test match in 1877. The team has won 315 of the 682 Test matches it has played against other countries and today is regarded as the leading Test match playing nation by the International Cricket Council by heading its Test Championship table.

Australia is also a leading international one day team having won 381 of the 625 One Day Internationals it has played against other countries. Australia won the Cricket World Cup in 1987, 1999 and 2003 and currently heads the ICC One Day International Championship table

ICC Test and ODI rankings with latest update on 15 Aug 2006 are as under:

Test:
AUS 130 Pts
PAK 120 Pts
ENG 113 Pts

ODI
AUS 131 Pts
SAF 123 Pts
PAK 115 Pts

From above records Australia is at the top in both types of game, therefore, AUS is NO 1.
PAK is among top three in both tests and ODIs, therefore, PAK is at No 2.
At No 3 it could be either or both of ENG and SAF but i think SAF is more appropriate at No 3.
India is 4th in both versions of the game.
