you MUST feed them a food with VITAMIN C added (eg. not rabbit food)

DO NOT use CEDAR shavings - only PINE or straw

handling - they should get lots of handling - make sure you pick up and hold any Guinea Pig you are thinking of getting - it is best to get them from an SPCA or family rather than a pet store - since most pet stores get them from large factory type breeders they are not handled much and more apt to bite..
cage - bigger is always better
toys - they like balls, towels, sticks for chewing - infact they need sticks for chewing
treats - veges but NOT onions
need salt/mineral block

water - GP have a repuation for being hard on water bottles.. so get a really good quality one or a bowl you can attach to the side of a cage so it wont spill

First of all they are nervous animals and can be scared easily. SO no loud noises and when you pick them up don't just grab them...pet them a little and gently pick them up...they will squeel if not alot...atleast a little. They can be scared by other animals too especially dogs...but not all are. You can purchase a guinee pig cage at the local pet store...it has a plastic bottom and wire top. These are the best because they alow air flow. But you could put it in an aquarium. If you have one I would syuggest a 15 or 20 gallon. You can also get those at your llocal pet store. Also just use bedding for them..not cedar.they also make a bedding that is made of recycled news papers...this is good. Make sure to change the bedding and clean out the cage atleast once every 3 days...depending on how messy he is. If you go to the pet store they have food...treats...and toys for them...just look. Another good thing is to give them veggies they like those too. Like carrots and celery...(I have owned several ) Just buy a food dish for food. He will need a water bottle...you can buy those at the pet store too....they hook right on the wire of the cage. Well I hope I helped some...

I have had four guinea pigs in my life and they are pretty easy to care for. I'll give you the information I know without looking it up. Okay, when cleaning there cage never use pine bedding. Harms them in some way. That's how one of my pigs died. When handling them be very careful. They are sensitive animals and can be hurt easily. Cages: I'd recommend using a wire cage. It's easier to keep clean and proves some exercise for them. Meaning guinea pigs like to lean on the side of the cage standing on their back legs. Toys: My guinea pigs never really played with toys. Treats: I found out that the best treats to use for guinea pigs are any of the following lettuce, carrots, apples, and hay. But their favorite treat and one of the most important is oranges because they need the vitamin C. I have listed a website below and I hope that it works out for you!

Guinea pigs are very social. If you are not going to be able to spend a couple hours every day interacting with yours, you should have two.
Get the largest cage you can afford. Second hand is fine if you clean it thoroughly. You can also make one. i have used an old bookcase with the shelves removed, laid on its back on a waterproof surface. Guinea pigs can't climb or hop over a wall about 10 inches high.
They need guinea pig pellets, as much as they want every day. Fresh water every day and some fresh fruit and vegetables every day. They like timothy hay to nibble on. They love oranges, melons, apples, carrots, and dandelion greens. Never feed them iceberg lettuce, but they like dark green leafy vegetables of all kinds. Onions are poisonous to most small animals. If you give them broccoli or cabbage, they will get gassy. It doesn't seem to hurt them, but it really stinks.
Guinea pigs will play with cardboard boxes, tissue paper, and cardboard tubes like the ones from the center of masking tape rolls. They also need branches from fruit trees or willow trees to gnaw on.
They need some time outside their cage every day to exercise and explore. You can purchase guinea pig size exercise wheels for them to run on in their cage.
Always support their hind legs when you pick them up, their soft little bellies can't hold their weight safely. They need to be held and petted or combed every day. They are very social.
Guinea pigs have a body shape that is described as cobby. This means they should look overweight compared to most other animals. Their belly should not touch the ground when they walk, but they should not have a waist either. When viewed from above, a healthy guinea pig will look like a smooth oval or egg shape from head to tail.
Guinea pigs are the ideal caged pet, they are big enough to hold easily, small enough to live in a cage comfortably, not very smelly if their cage is cleaned every couple days, and very affectionate.

They need to be feed and watered everyday. You have to put fresh vitamins in their water everyday or they will get scurvy. They squeal a lot until they get use to you, and they like fruit treats. They need a cage that is big enough for them to move around, eat drink, and have fun. They eat pellets and hay for food and their cage needs to be cleaned at least once a week.
