Theoretically speaking the ideology of communism has many positive features which unfortunately do not work in practice.
Here in East Europe, the legacy of communism [poverty] has brought about many aspects which might seem positive to outsiders. For example, many people have remained self sufficient and grow the majority of food they eat.Unlike in the west, very little goes to waste.Things are repaired, recycled, plates always left clean, rainwater saved, bicycles used in preference to cars, lights always turned off after use, etc, etc.

communism IS positive in itself, it's just been ripped off by fascists and elite rich white men who don't want to lose control over the people. Imagine America, without millions of dollars involved in the political process and keeping policy makers from doing the will of the people. Imagine Enron, but instead of the people losing everything, they were taken care of. Imagine if money didn't affect how the judicial system treated you and that the normal person had as much say as the CEO of ExxonMobil....Imagine health care without having to fill out insurance forms, or getting turned away from medical treatment because you're too poor.
In the original philosophy of communism, written by Karl Marx, entitled the Communist Manifesto, what the government would look like was never described. So, theoretically, as long as money is no longer the god of our lives, and every person is equal, than we could be going through communism as if nothing was different. Normal people wouldn't know the difference.
The reason it is so vilified is because communists don't usually play well with capitalists, and most communists turned out to be more interested in fascism than the people's interests.
True communism, a.k.a. Marxism, has never been implemented anywhere. It is supposed to be a gradual change that happens as people get sicker and sicker of the exploitation of capitalism. So, the worker's rights movement after the industrial revolution is a great example of the people getting sick of being mistreated.
Money is the root of all evil. Past psuedo communist leaders have commited sins trying to destroy money, while others commit many sins in the search for money. Only when the seas are acid, and the earth won't grow, will the people realize they can't eat money.
it's not war over race that you should pay attention to. It's not war against Arabs that the Mideast Crisis is about. It's all about money, but who profits from it. Surely not you or me? But someone does....The real battle are those between the classes. And it breaks down to the top 2% of the population with 85% of the wealth versus the rest of us. They get rich off blood that isn't theirs.

Communism is a system that works well in theory but tends to fall apart in practice. Ideally, if every member of a communist society works to the best of his or her own ability and shares according to need, it works. Everyone has food, shelter, and meaningful work.
Unfortunately, we humans tend to become lazy, greedy, and materialistic. When nobody is watching, it is tempting to slack off in our work duties and do just the bare minimum to get by. Another person may suspect that this is happening, feel resentful, and feel justified in doing the same. Also, people often take "more than their fair share" of food or supplies, leaving less for others.
Like I said, communism is great in theory, but impractical in reality. The positive side of communism is that everyone is considered equal, works together, and shares what they have. Its just that humanity gets in the way.

A perfect communism is one of the best political ideals ever created. Yes the rich wouldn't be too happy that they would become equal with the middle & lower class but as an idea it is amazingly powerful... to bad it can't work in the real world.
Edit: As an aside what people refer to as "Communist states" such as the USSR and China are not technically Communist. They are more of a dictatorship than a communism. We are talking about communism in the pureist of senses, not a dictatorship called communism.

If you read the communist doctrine and apply it to the world of the 1800's when it was written it was an excellent idea, however the practicality of it was nill. To apply it to today's world is impossible. There is no positive side in today's world.

Not a damn thing! Communism is a horrendous system to live under. You can expect brain washing from childhood throughout your life. Individuals are of no concern to the state, the masses are important.
There is no real freedom, except to worship the state ideology(religion).....
All in all, don't even consider letting yourself believe there is any positive aspects to communism. It is a DEAD END.
I have seen first hand what communists do to their own people, they remind me of Islamo-facists.
