Hi. That's kind of funny since I've been told by over 200 authors that it's a waste of time to get an agent.
First, it depends on what kind of book you're wanting to publish.
Get an up to date copy of "Writer's & Illustrator's Market" 1000+ Editors, Agents, and Art Directors who want your work. It will help you match the correct publishing house with your particular work so you don't waste your time and money and their time. They are looking for different types of works at different times so that's why it has to be the most recent. If you can't afford to buy one usually your local library will have it.
If it is non-fiction and has any historical significance one of the best sources is a University that is doing publishing based on your subject. (But it must be immaculately researched) For instance one of the Universities in New Mexico publishes several books a year on subjects having to do with the South West and her peoples from ancient times to present. They have a real interest in getting accurate info. out there.
Go to your local University Library, esp. if it's one of the U.S.'s 'research' libraries. They have up to date books that will give you a plethera of information of how to submit correctly to a major house, and what local publishing houses are available. All publishing houses are NOT in NYC anymore. Hooray for that! Some houses allow you to submit on-line too. Ask at the University Library if you can get the name of one of the still publishing profs. in your subject area. If it's fiction, go for that type lit. prof. Then ask for an interview with him and get as much info. as possible. Professors have to continue publishing to keep their jobs...as a general rule.
Best wishes on your endeavor!
Please leave any of us who've helped you a thumbs up!

No, there is not an easier way. I tried to get an agent for years. Agents do not want to represent you unless you have been published. Most publishers do not want to read a manuscript from you unless you have an agent. Good luck.
I finally got published when I found a publisher that would read unagented manuscripts. Not many of them will.

I'm also an aspiring author.
I don't know what kind of book you're writing, but for first time novelists, it's best to not have an agent; it's harder to get one than getting a publisher! Once you're established, then you could get an agent.
Now, if you're writing Canadiana-type stories, or biographies or non-fiction, Canadian publishing houses would be the best. If you're writing genre or fiction, going over-seas is your best bet, for the first book (you can always change your publishing company once you're established).
Good luck.
P.S. Check out Canadian Author's Association.

Well, you could do what I did. Go to a publishing (or printing) company and have it printed there. Then advertise it. You will have to fill out a copyright form and you will be listed with the National Library of Congress (pretty neat to me!) for a nominal fee. How much it costs to print your book will depend on the pages and number of copies. Since mine was a children's book it only had a few pages. Good luck.

If no agent will represent you, then perhaps the book is not ready for publishing.
If you are determined, you can submit it directly to publishing companies (query first), or you can self-publish (there are many such companies).

having re searched your question in depth,i have come to the conclusion that the only way to publish your book is to become infamous first, then you can serialise it in a newspaper or magazine, read my book ,How i become infamous,
