What Operating System will you be running? If you want to run the Mac OS, you are going to need a Mac. If you want to run Windows, you pretty much need an IBM-compatible computer. Mac's will run Windows, but it's slower. If you're going to run Linux, it's not an issue.
If you're thinking about Mac vs. Windows, Windows is more compatible in the real world. Most businesses--with the exception of animation, graphics, and publishing--use Windows computers, and you may need to be able to run software at home.
Personally, I love Dell computers. I've bought five laptops and a server from them and used three laptops through my office over the past ten years.

If you plan to use it for school, then first check with the school, but going with a Dell would be more compatible.
In the long run, the Windows based laptop will be more functional and compatible.

I've purchased many and you generally get higher performance, better compatibility, and lower cost with a Dell PC than an Apple Macintosh. (Laptops included.)
Things to check and compare:
Processor and processor bus speed
Ram and ram bus speed (533 MHz, 667 MHz)
Video card and video RAM
Hard drive size and speed (5700 RPM, 7200 RPM, 10000 RPM)
Monitor size, resolution, and quality
Equivalently priced PC/Mac comparisons show the PC coming out well ahead of the Mac.

Depending on what you're using the laptop for, it could vary. Personally, I would go with the Dell because of the sheer amount of supported software that is available for PC's.

then if finally comes down to the OS that your gonna run. if your thinking of the new apple-intel versions, then it has been shown that they are faster at running windows that their counterparts. Also, dell has been having some battery problems in the past.....take a look at that problem too. I say that if you can get the apple, then jump right in!

An apple has the same performance, but which costs more, and which is more compatible with the software you will need to use?

Bull crap. Who told you that?! Apples are far better than any other computer on the map. Apples OS is great and easier to operate. Same performance?!...I think not.
