i have a pinto mare, 28 yrs old and is starting to get stiff, she is used in lessons and horseshows.
she cracks when she walks her joints crack. she still runs out in the feild and i still ride i just find she is slowing down and gets tried fast i have a total of 4 horses and she is the only one that seems to be slowing down the other 3 are also in there 20`s and are fine.
should i put this mare on something for her joints?
or what else can i do for her.

Hello 28 is a good old age for a horse and levels with a old person
in their 70-80s her metabolism will be slow and the aging process
would have affected her also this old girl should be loved and kept warm in winter and enjoy her freedom come spring keep her comfortable and happy just as you would your elderly grandparents.
she may not digest her food so well now give her feed thats easy to digest ,keep her feet in trim and as she will hardly have many teeth now and if she has she will be using the roots of whats left of her teeth have them checked out a least twice ayear .
watch for any bullying by the younger horses she may go short of grass or hay.
She will get very tired easily and lack muscle tone and stamina
horses age differently and if she has had a hard full life joints are worn and sore and old bones do not renew as a young horse would. retire her now and love and look after her and solivtax oil is good for older joints .
28 is a good old age she has given her life to those who worked her now give her the love and peice of mind she has earned.
All though i say all this please dont just turn out and forget her she would love to be groomed and walked and lots of attention and take part in life.
best wishes to you and the old horse.

Glycoflex. It has done absolute wonders for my old mare. She went from creeping out of her stall to trotting out with everyone else. It is a joint supplement, It's expensive though but worth it and I only use about half the recommended odse because she wasn't on anything before. I think they begin to get immunities to the effects. Good luck with her

Well it may be time to retire her. I would at least stop using her for shows nad only let light people ride her. Give her msm powder or legecy pellets or even both
Talk to a vet or feed store employee for different options

Find a massage therapist. Massage will loosen the muscles, improve circulation, increase the production of synovial fluid, increase her range of motion, and much more. It will do all of these things naturally.
The therapist will most likely want to see your horse once a week.

Gosh, RETIRE her!! 28 years old and you're still using her in horse shows, what do you expect, most horses are already dead by now!
Let her be a pasture pet, she's earned it.

perhaps a feed suppliment - particularly one with YUCCA in it, which is good for arthritis....
ya and like the other person said.. she has deserved to have her work load reduced
