Yeah. Eventhough your monitors off, the processor, processes, RAM and many other things will continue running. Which will lead to reduction of your computers life. And there will be unwanted usage of current from battery/socket. So it is always BEST to "Shutdown" your computer if you have finished using. You can also "Hibernate" but that occupies space. Since you have finished working, that space would go as waste. Why waste. Just click 2 buttons (Start->Shutdown). How long is it going to take? After cliking on Shutdown you can shut your screen. It auto shuts down.

That is a power saving feature. It actually is good for the laptop because it reduces wear and tear on the screen and other components that are powered down.
If you want to change that, go into the Control Panel and click on the Power Options icon. Since you did not give the brand of laptop, I can not be specific, but there should be a page that lets you set options for how long the laptop waits before turning off different things (screen, drive, etc) whether it is on or off the plug. Also (usually on the Advanced page) there may be a place where you can tell the laptop what to do when you close the lid. If you do not want it to go dark when you close it, change it to "do nothing" or something else instead.

You should go ahead and shut down the laptop if you're not going to use it again for more than a few hours coz maybe if you keep doing as you do, over time, the cooling system won't work anymore and then you'd have to hope you had a warranty so you can get a new laptop without having to buy it yet. When cooling systems go, other things go wrong and then either the store sends it away to be repaired or they give you a new one, but you'd be without a laptop for a long time, possibly up to a month.

well, it depends...sometimes you think the laptop shuts off by itself but it doesn't always do that. i think it's better to check to see if it's completely off first...i learned from my personal experience...
