First, is there a demand for this sort of venture? That is, are people going to actually want to pay you to play video games as opposed to going to somebodies house?

I'd say:

0. Secure funding. You can't start a business venture with the $500 in savings. Get with someone who knows business, figure out costs (all of them. rent, electricity, hardware, software, wages, etc.), write up a business plan, and take it to a bank. Tthey'll get you the money (it's how they make money).

1. LOCATION! Noone will show up if it isn't someplace convenient. get it in a mall or a near a college/highschool.

2. Host a bunch of "Grand Opening" events. (eg give-aways, tournaments, incentives for stopping in)

3. Make sure people are coming back. Implement a customer appreciation program. If you play "x" hours, you get "y" hours free.

4. Don't do a half-@ss job. People who play video games are picky. Don't just cobble together a bunch of "retro" systems, last generation consoles, and mediocre computers. Focus on one thing, then expand when you have the money. Maybe buy a couple 360s and 4 or 5 xboxs. they have lots of multiplayer compatible games and online funtionality. Having great stereo sound and HDTVs (at least for the 360s) would also get people in there.

5. Have the software to support the hardware. Noone wants to play an absolutely beautiful, crap game.

6. Broadband. Make sure people can play online. It's a MUST.

7. Family friendly. Kids will DRAG their parents there.

8. It would be cool to partner with a games store too. You can send them business through word of mouth, advertising in your store, special offers only available to people who play. You could get premier events (when games come out have a midnight release party), good press from their store, and cross promotions in their store.

Opening a business isn't a small venture. You need to WANT it. Talk to people who are already doing what you want to be doing. If you're outside of their geographic area, they'll probably answer some basic questions for you because you won't be competing directly with them (maybe they'll franchise too. then a lot of the work is done).

If the answer to the first question was "no", then don't open a store.

Please talk to experienced people. My answer is only based on little experience, common sense, what I'd want, and a minor is Business Administration.

My first ever video game was Super Mario on Nintendo when I was 12. That belonged to my sister. The first ever console that I owned was an Atari 32. The games were loaded from a cassette tape, which took about 5 minutes to load each game! I don't remember all the games I played, but my favourite games were Spy vs Spy and Spy Hunter :-) EDIT - I was about 14 when I got my Atari second hand from an auction.

I never charged anyone but before i found the love of a good woman i used to have three different PS1 hooked up to three different t.vs and we would play till morning.I however do not recommend playing like this. My whole life used to be school, work, then Mr. pibb and Cheetos. But i still love games and play a lot, but not like i once did, but if that is your love then go right on ahead with it. As for setting up one like i said lots of games and Mr.pibb good luck.

Simple, just invite everyone to your house and told them that this is a gaming center.
