Has anyone ever hitched a lift and found themselves being driven by someone famous???

I don't know if this counts, and I shall not even begin to explain how, I managed to hitch a lift off Sir Iain McGregor (chief of the NCB and Maggie Thatcher's stooge) in his white Merc in 1984 during the depths of the coal miner's strike. For those old enough to remember those days, this was truly bizarre...

Yes....The Sultan of Brunei picked me up on the A303 because I had broken down and he gave me £800 when I got out. I was dumbfounded!

Well, sort of famous... I was attending the Mariposa folk music festival, back when it was still held on the Toronto Islands. I was with a group of artisans, and when we rode in the little water-taxi boat with some of the performers (which was really only supposed to be for them), I got to sit beside Tommy Makem, the wonderful Irish musician. He was sitting there playing a tin pennywhistle. I had never realized what a lovely sound that instrument could make, but back then I was too shy to tell him so. But it had a big influence on me, since I later learned to play the pennywhistle myself, and teach others to play.

I broke down once in my car, only to be given a lift by Bono. He was so nice and down to earth. He dropped me off at my front door. What a cool guy.
