I am interested in watching Hotel Rwanda but would like a little background on the matter.

hotel rwanda is an excellent movie. and even if you dont know anything about what went on, the movie does explain it. i saw the movie without having any knowledge about the events until i saw the flick.
botton line, the hutu wanted to take over the area where the tsotsi people were living in, and not of hatred and racist, the revelation happen. it was very sad but makes you realize that there is racistism everywhere even within the same races.

Google it. Plus, you don't need to get background info to watch a movie. I've seen Hotel Rwanda and it didn't require any research beforehand.

But since you asked, look up ethnic cleansing because that is the proper term for what was going on in Rwanda at the time. The same is going on in Darfur today.

because the hutus thought the tsotsi people were impure - like a romeo and juliet scenario etc

the hutus were bitter about earlier attacks from the tsotsis i think
