I have American freinds that are not stupid.
But really, all these bounty hunter programs, americas dumbest criminals, cops etc etc.
They just make you all look so retarded.

Oh my god yes i must agree that lots of british soaps, i.e Coranation Street are absolute balls and i wouldn't waste my time watching them.

As with any country there is always a certain subculture within society that is "different" shall we say. Here in the states we find those people amusing and that is why we make television shows about them. It would be wrong for anyone to believe that all Americans are like the ones portrayed on the reality shows. The shows are just something to watch for escapism after a long day at work. You don't have to think much, and it's entertaining. Not everything in life has to be high brow to be fun. I think Americans are very diverse and open to many things when it comes to entertainment. We are not stupid or retarded as a whole.

I think its just a question of percentages.
If for example 25% of people are thick as pigsh*t then that will be the same across the globe.
However there are 10x as many people in USA so it just seems like they have
10 x the idiots
10 x the gun nuts
10 x the extremists (lets kill all the Muslims....its the only way)
But they also have 10 x the best of everything too. It's just, when did anyone who was ok get on TV?

Haven't seen many of these programs, but here's the stupid thing - many, MANY people will do anything for a buck. And all over the world, absolutely every where, people do stupid things (like dumbest criminals). We just know about it more because world-wide communication makes it easy to see it and hear about it.
Plus, the bottom line for television is to make money, and most people turn it on to be entertained.

I clicked on this question to count how many Americans told you to hug an American sewer rat's filthy ankles!! But instead read a lot of different views from my fellow Americans that made me pause. I don't even watch those programs because I find them "stupid"! But no, the entire country is not retarded and I probably should not question yours or your fellow countrymen's intelligence either. I have worked jobs that have hordes of stupid people. I even worked with a guy who was on "Jerry Springer". So I don't care to watch them on the television. For those of you that work with intelligent folk, you are probably entertained by "Jerry Springer", "Cops", "Big Brother", "The Simple Life", etc. I guess enough people find stupidity entertaining enough that it does well on T.V.
Unfortunately, stupid people are common enough that I can see how someone could be convinced all Americans are stupid. If Mr. Springer moved to the U.K., I'm sure you would be horrified at the change in attitude many people in the world would have toward you and your fellow countrymen.

Yes, there really are a lot of stupid people, everywhere in the world. But as Americans, we seem to get a kick out of watching them on television.

The point of reality shows really is to see how stupid people can make themselves, because thats how the producers will notice them. There are very smart people in this country and I think reality shows give people a bad name I personally hate reality shows.

If most Americans would have been like the retards you see on TV, they would not be showing those people on TV. The only reason they make those programs is to make good TV (which, in the producer's mind, is to show dumb people doing dumb stuff).

Every country has its share of intellectual challenged people. To say that the inhabitants of one country are on average dumber than others is a gross generalisation.

well, people are stupid no matter where you go. Do you really think all Australians are a stupid as the "Crocodile Hunter" I mean really, people like to watch stupid people on TV to make them selves seem better. Name one county that doesn't make there people seem stupid? And also, when stupid people get on these shows, they act even more stupid.
