Because he won't say three words: "Leave Alex alone."

An MVP is most valuable to his team. If Jeter told Yankee fans to back off A-Rod, Yankee fans would because he is worshipped by Yankee fans. And instantly, A-Rod - whose level of play is more affected by fan support (or lackthereof) than any other MLB olayer - would see an astronomical rise in his batting stats, and a drop in fielding errors. The Yanks as a team would thereby improve as well, and they would have at least three of four more victories than they do now. Everyone knows this.

Including Jeter. Yet Jeter says nothing. Why? Probably because of pride, probably because he hasn't liked living in A-Rod's shadow over the past two seasons. It's Jeter's selfishness that is costing the team, which is why Jeter absolutely cannot be named this season's MVP.

While I think Jeter should stand up for his teammates, I also think that maybe he doesn't want to do it for fear of embarassing Alex. Alex is a very proud, stoic guy who will rarely let his true emotions show - he's like a robot sometimes. I think that, were Jeter to speak up, Alex might actually be a little insulted. He knows how good he is, and having someone else have to talk for him might be a weakness he doesn't want to show.

As for those of you who think Jeter is self-centered or selfish, you are idiots who know nothing about the guy. He's the product of a great family, and he has let very little of his success go to his head. He plays for the biggest franchise in North American sports, yet he maintains a cool head, never gets in trouble off the field, and generally keeps his personal life to himself. He conducts himself well on the field, and he's well-spoken and kind off of it. I would love to have my kids emulate his behavior, that of a hard worker who wants only to help his team win.

Why might A-Rod know if Jeter replaced into going to win the MVP? he's in basic terms attempting to inform the international that he helps Jeter, yet while, via twist of destiny, there's a centred call between Jeter and A-Rod, I could anticipate that votes might pass greater in the direction of Jeter because of this fact (although i'm particular that A-Rod would be plenty greater deserving, in basic terms look on the numbers, Jeter can no longer compete whether it rather is not any longer voted in keeping with meaningless thoughts)

I'm a Red Sox Fan, and I would love to have Derek Jeter on my team. Even though I hate him, I still respect the guy. He's always been a great player for the Yankees while at the same time showing class, being respectful to everyone, always saying the right things. He's solid defensively and offensively always seems to come up with that hit at the right time. He could easily win MVP this year. Personally I'd give it Papi who AGAIN hit a go-ahead HR on Wednesday, even though Wells gave it right back. Jeter is the Jason Varitek of the Yankees. Just plain solid on every level.
Yankees lose Jeter and that team isn't the same, Red Sox lose Varitek and the Sox fall apart.
Jeter is a great player and probably should win MVP if there was no guy named Ortiz in that division.
A-Rod is a good player but he just gets paid way way too much. Someone with his price tag should be hitting .400 and 60HR's a year. That's the problem with A-Rod. He gets paid so much money and hit.290 40HR 100+RBI, which would be good for most but A-Rod is suppose to be the best player in the league. That's the only complaint around A-Rod.

Wait a second you want Jeter to come out and tell fans how to react to a player who is not really producing on the field or at the plate.Give me a break.Do you really think the fans will really listen to him.No way.Jeter is a great player and deserves the MVP but won't get it because Big PAPi is having a great season for Boston even if i hate Boston i have to say that.

I totally agree with u that Derek should stand up for his teammate Alex.
I mean that's what a team leader should do. right? he stepped up for Jason Giambi last time, why shouldn't he do it same for Alex? this is so unfair for Alex, fans(not me though) don't appreciate the good things that he had done to the team, but yet they forget all of those good things that Alex had done!!! I juz don't get it. why shouldn't Derek Jeter step up for Alex? it juz a simple words that he has to say, which is "LEAVE ALEX ALONE!" why can't he? aren't he the captain of the team? whatever the reason is...that's the part I don't like about Derek Jeter!!!
I BELIEVE ALEX WILL FIND HIS WAY OUT OF THIS SOON!!!!!!!

NOTE: FANS SHOULD BACK OFF A-ROD!!!!!!!

WOW..you are way off base and sadly misinformed. A-rod doesn't need a mouthpiece and probably doesn't want one...it would cause further embarassment to him. Another thing...Jeter lives in NoOne's shadow, especially not A-rod's.

Go back to sleep.

Jeter IS going to win the MVP!!!!!! I mean, look at his average...it's .341. And he plays great shortstop and he hits well also. David Ortiz is NOT going to win the MVP because he stinks!!!

It has nothing to do with pride, Jeter is self centered, egotistical and self righteous. You will never hear him stick up for A-Rod, its not what Jeter is about.Jeter is about himself and only himself.Besides as it has been said, the GOD of baseball is fighting his way to be named MVP, and that is the man himself David Ortiz.!!!!He is one man that deserves that honor!!!!Go Red Sox!!!

derek jeter wont be MVP because david ortiz is single handedly carrying boston to the playoffs... because travis hafner is one swing away from breaking the single season grand slams record..... because justin morneau is hitting .360 or maybe because maglio ordonez solidifies the scariest team in baseball the detroit tigers pick one

Because his name's not Ortiz. Unless he tanks it the rest of the season, he's the MVP.

Of course, the Red Sux won't make the playoffs, but he still gets MVP.
