obviously, it IS a drug. I don't know enough about AA to answer as to why they're attempting to segregate alcohol from other drugs (Side note: there is NA [Narcotics Anonymous], too, which is basically the same program for the different "drugs"). Their ancient literature was written at a time in history when Alcohol was really the only true drug problem in the US, atleast on a widespread scale, so that may be why other substances are not included. Also, the basic principle of AA has always been that alcohol is not a drug so much as Alcoholism is a disease, thereby placing the reform effort with the individual rather than with society at large (ie. Lets not rail against alcohol and it's suppliers, but lets go after our own "demons" and face the truth about our weaknesses). AA has worked wonders for some people. They have a great philosophy, in large part, but they should not be shunning other drug addictions as being morally and socially different somehow than alcoholism. You are right, Alcohol is right up there with the worst of drugs with respect to its impact of both society and the individuals and familys afflicted. It also happens to be a billion dollar cash cow industry in the US. don't get me started on why alcohol is even legal next to the less harmful substances that people are doing hard time in prison for using.

Alcoholic Anonymous understands that alcohol alters one 's state of being and so of course alcohol is a drug which is addictive.
I'm not sure what your diatribe is all about . Are you anti AA? There are programs which say they can hypnotize people not to be alcoholics but there's been no real demonstrative research back up to say this is true.
For an alcoholic , one drink is never enough and one drink is one drink too many.
Alcoholism is a disease but that still makes the actions of an alcoholic addict -like.

Narcotics Anonymous recognizes that alcohol is a drug. I dont know if Jesus is responsible for the definition of 'drug", I would like to see some proof of that, it's an interesting concept. However, in Narcotics Anonymous, there is no distinction made about alcohol, nicotine, super glue, whatever. Maybe you should try an NA meeting.

wow, i should invest in rambling translation software so I could get something coherrant from all this... I'll give the benifit of the doubt that you are NOT an idiot. Are you in AA, or some sort of re-hab? or if not, have some sort of beef with AA? Or perhaps you are currently under the influence of these so-called "better drugs"
Alcohol, nicotine and caffiene in my oppinion are all drugs. They separate themselves from other drugs by not having any long term effects when used in moderation. When used excessivly however, they can be harmful. Alcohol especially. I've enver met an alki or a former alki who was "all there". Personally, if people want to fry their brain that is their God-given right. It just means less competition for getting ahead in life :)

Yes alcohol is a drug. So are caffeine and nicotine. I have heard arguments recently that sugar is a drug also.
Last year I think it was, they were trying to get the FDA to approve nicotine water! YIKES! Thankfully they rejected it.
Whether or not AA calls it a drug makes no difference to the treatment of the addiction and the success of AA in general.

Alcohol is a drug and the long term use of it can hurt you just as badly as a some of the hard drugs we have today.
I have watched a few people in my family who went from being normal people to 10-15 years later being a totally different person. It seems as though their brains are fried.

Been AA for 15+ years. yes it is a drug. it is also a systemic poison. I have never sat in a meeting where it was not claimed to be a drug, it is just in a particular class. If you take the words you say we try to redefine and get out the good old dictionary rather than ranting you might learn something.
Why are you blaming Jesus for this, alcoholics were here before him and after, it is not his fault. Maybe you have a little guilt hidden somewhere. For the most part AA'ers do not care if you get sober, just that they do. If you want to join us, OK. but if you do not that is your choice

Yes .. the meaning of Drug is a substance that is used as a medicine or a narcotic. the meaning of narcotic is a drug that produces numbness or stupor; often taken for pleasure or to reduce pain; extensive use can lead to addiction..... and that sounds like Alcohol to me
What Jesus has to do with the word drug is beyond me, but if you are now off alcohol then congratulations...

Alcohol is definately a drug, just not an illegal drug. And AA as an organization does not separate itself from drug addicts. My son's problem was cocaine. His meeting place is AA, and many alcoholics also have drug problems.

Alcohol and nicotine are drugs! And a lot of stuff that actually improve our health are drugs. That's why there are drug stores I think and they happen to be totally legal. It's basically like calling some wines dry, even if all wines are always wet!
