Because then they are assured that the people who care for them are near to them and that they are not left alone.Also gives them a sense of protection

patting the baby on the back induces the personal touch of the mother and child feels secure that some one is awaking and taking care of her which gradually induces a rythum and finally child sleeps

may have more to do with the closeness of another person and the rhythm of the patting and rocking that generally goes along with it. It may simulate the comfort feeling of being secure in the womb.

The gentle jiggling reminds them of the womb. It's also why white noise and swaddling are great ways to calm an upset baby.

My guess is because it's rhythmic. Babies love a slow rhythm...rocking, patting, rubbing their back or stomach, etc.

Probably reminds them of the rhythmic motion and sound of your heartbeat from when they were in the womb.
