U mean a trike with independent rear suspension, or one with both wheels pretty much next to each other?
i remember a while ago someone did make a bike that had 4 wheels, 2 next to each other on the back and the same on the front, i don't know if it ever went into production, or if it was just a concept bike

Been there. Done that. Mounted the engine between the rear swing arms to shift the weight to the back. Used a shaft drive engine and turned it around. Coupled it to a shortened rear axel from a toyota truck and put the drive sprokets on the end of the axels. I didn't go with the trike configuration though. I set the front suspension up like you'd see on a dune buggy.

theyre called trikes. VW uses a transaxle, or half shaft, not a propshaft as suggested. this (back axle) needs to be about three quarters of teh length of the vehicle. (as a rule of thumb) so with your side by suicide setup itll tip over on corners, however, you can use a live beam axle with coil over dampers, (rear bike shocks) but its 4feet six Ish wide.
you go around corners putting load onto the outside wheel, and lifting the inner, and running onthe inner edge of the front tyre reducing contact with the road surface... and death waits patiently
we think weve just cracked two wheels at the front, like the aerial atom, with a 1000cc BMW engine frame and running gear, yes, one back wheel. 0-60 6seconds, top end around 135mph

There's a guy who lives not to far from where I do who has a trike that would qualify. It seems to use a VW / dune buggy style rear suspension and quite possibly the VW engine too.
I'm not all that interested in one myself - I might be if I lived further north where I would have to deal with snow more often than once a year.

As people are saying you need an axle with a diff in it. This allows the wheels to turn at different rates when you go around corners - without this it would want to go straight on.
Of course you could have 2 wheels at each end - I'd normally call this a car but then Dodge came up with it's V10 Tomahawk concept. http://www.diseno-art.com/encyclopedia/concept_cars/dodge_tomahawk.html
I think this is what they invented the word awesome for!!!
Good Luck.

Not like that.
I may have a death wish, but it doesn't include stupidity.
If you wanna build something, you need to think about it a little first. Not all roads are straight. Your suggested design will not corner.
