My doctor told me that I have a hormonal imbalance and I need to start birth control pill immediately to help with the pain. However it was on day 5 of my last period that she told me to start to take pills. Once the gynecologist (other doctor) had said that pills must start on your period, the box does say to start on the day of your period. Question, am taking 21 homonal tablets and 7 non hormonal tablets, of course when my period starts again I would not have finish taking all the first pack. Can I start the other pack on the day my period comes now, and forget about taking all the non hormonal tablets? Would it make my body go out of wack?

I guess just follow your doctor's advice. Call the dr office or your pharmacy for medical questions having to do with your pills.

No, you do not have to be on any specific day of your period or cycle for that matter. For some it is easier for their body to regulate when they start the pill on their first day of their period but in the end it ends up working. Just keep taking the pills 21 and then the final 7 (placebos) one right after the other. You will end up hormonally cycling as a "normal" person and the pain will subside.

I skipped a week of the pill and started a week after my period to delay my period and miss it during vacation (which would have been week 4 normally). Though you shouldn't do this regularly as it will mess with the cycle, my doctor told me I could do this once. It didn't hurt me and everything is back to normal now!

If you are still seriously concerned about the issue, don't hesitate to either talk to your doctor(s) and or pharmacist--they're the specialists!

OK, first of all, the reason why people are told to start taking the pill on the first day of their next period, is to make sure that they are not pregnant before they start taking it, because if they ARE pregnant, the hormones can affect the developing foetus and cause problems.

If you know for sure that you are not pregnant, ie. if you are a virgin, or if you do a pregnancy test and it is negative, you can start taking the contraceptive pill any day of your cycle you want.

Next........being on the contraceptive pill alters the levels of hormones in your body. They set up a sort of "fake" menstrual cycle of their own. So when you start taking them, they will alter your hormone levels. The period you have when you are on the pill is not a true period, it is a withdrawal bleed. When the level of progesterone drops, it causes the endometrial lining to be shed, so you get your "period". So you take your 21 active pills, then when you start on the sugar pills, the progesterone level drops and you will bleed.

So in terms of you starting the pill on day 5 of your cycle, the active tablets should keep the hormone levels steady until you start the 7 sugar tablets. So what I'm saying, is that it's unlikely your period will start when you expect it to, because your hormone levels will be changed by the pill.

Even if you do start bleeding before you finish the active pills, just continue taking them, take the seven sugar pills and THEN start the next pack, everything will sort itself out within the first couple of months.

I hope this was clear, if you have any questions you can e-mail me through my Q&A page.

You can begin to take birth control pills on any day of your period. But remember that during the first month you should use another form of birth control like condoms to avoid getting pregnant. I know from personal experience. I recently started back taking taking birth control on day 21 of having my period. Yes, day 21. now after 33 days of bleeding and going to the doctors i am period free.
