Hi- I came over because you answered my question about New Zealand and I have some opinions about where to live in the U.S. Someone else answered you that San Dimas California was the place to live and the interesting thing is that I lived there for 20 years. San Dimas is not bad but it is surrounded by older decaying neighborhoods such as Covina and Pomona, Azusa and West Covina. The smog levels in San Dimas are very often in the unhealthy level, the schools are old and there are a lot of gangs and drugs at the high school level. The area is very congested, there is always heavy traffic on the freeways and the cost of housing is outrageous. I am a broker in California and Texas and I still have a Calif office in San Dimas. A 10 year old tract home with 2000 sf will sell for about 700-800K. On the opposite end of the spectrum, you can buy an all brick brand new home in the Dallas Fort Worth area of Texas with 1800sf for about 140K. Texas is in the American sunbelt, as is California so it is pretty warm in the summer. It runs 5-10 degrees hotter in the summer than L.A. and 5-10 degrees colder in the winter than So. Cal. The cities that are the most desireable in the DFW area are Flower Mound, Frisco, Plano, Lewisville, Little Elm, Corinth. The best site to go to is www.city-data.com. There you will find demographics, population, crime stats, pollution stats, weather stats, income stats, job opportunities etc for any city in the U.S. Go there and compare those cities in California that I mentioned and the cities in Texas that I mentioned. There are many beautiful cities in the Pacific Northwest and throughout the midwest and the East coast. You get some pretty severe winters though in those areas which is fine if you like shoveling snow and freezing your body off. The gulf coast is beautiful but you have to deal with hurricanes. The nice thing about Texas is there is no state income tax. The only other states in the U.S. without any state income tax are Nevada, Florida, Wyoming, Washington and New hampshire. Gasoline in Texas runs 40-50 cents less per gallon than in california. Property taxes are higher in Texas though then California. Prop taxes in California are about 1.25 to 1.62 of assessed value whereas prop taxes in Texas are 2.5 to 3.1 approx of assesed value. But insurance is cheaper in Texas, utilities are deregulated so you can pick your electric company or phone company. Best of luck in your search for the perfect city!

The US is 50 different states with 50 different flavors. However, if you are liberal and like all people to have equal rights then you might try the north east/ New England or the west coast.
If you are more conservative and believe that life should follow what the church teaches you may want to move to the south east or mid west parts of the country.
There are safe parts and nice areas in every state... and people are people no matter where you go.

What makes a place "best to live" is very subjective. If you are elderly or have health issues, a "best place to live" probably has a lot of state of the art hospitals and medical care. If you are a young family, the "best place" will be somewhere with great schools and an affordable quality of life. If you are a young gay man, best place to live might be a swinging dating scene. It depends on where you are in your life and what you value.

Well, the state we live in has more cattle than people and we rather like it that way. Will you promise not to move here if I tell which state it is? LOL :)

Best (in terms of surroundings, people, etc.) would be California.
Cheapest would be those cold states like Michigan, Indiana and stuff.

I dont think it is safe to live in the US at all. Just read the news and watch TV. Many foreigners hate America.
I won`t live there if I were you.
