The car has 84,000 miles on it; during the last 9,000 miles I have replaced the following:

Spark plugs
Plug wires
Distributor cap
Transmission rebuild
Fuel filter
Injector cleaning

The car is sluggish....if I push it to the floor it sticks at about 4,000 rpm's for 10 seconds then shifts and is sluggish still. It feels like a fuel related problem, but the mechanic I took it to found nothing wrong. The car is so slow that a Cavalier could beat it! Anyone have any ideas?

I never thought of the timing chain.....I will check into that. It is sluggish all the way around, btw. This morning I slowly took it up to 110 mph to see it it did anything out of the ordinary at higher speeds. It feels like it has about 120 horsepower.

Wouldn't the timing being off cause the car to idle like crap? It idles just fine.

The problem with tracking gas mileage is that this car is not a daily driver. The 9,000 miles has occurred over a span of 2 1/2 years. It has never gotten better than 21 mpg. and I have not really noticed a drop, but it could have. Brakes are good as far as I can tell--no caliper rubbing or drum sticking in the rear.

How does it run from 500 thru 4000 rpm?

If it runs bad in this range:
1.Check for wear on the distributor shaft and timing gear at base of distributor shaft. The distributor shaft issues affect spark timing
2.Check for wear and backlash on timing chain. The chain issues affect both spark and valve timing.

If it runs fine in this range check the catalytic converter in your exhaust system. If it gets plugged up it will not let you get hardly over a certain rpm range and over time the it will get worse.

EDIT> That leaves the catalytic converter as your prime suspect.

I vote for a clog or restriction in the exhaust system, such as a clogged catalytic converter. You've done all the right things. What gas mileage have you been getting? If your gas mileage hasn't dropped sharply, then the fuel system is the likely culprit. If the gas mileage has dropped, a clog in the exhaust system is a good possibility.

One other thing: Are you sure the brakes aren't dragging?

It sure does sound like a fuel problem, doesn't it? Are you anywhere near a Advance Auto Parts? They have a machine they can hook up to your car...it might be able to tell you what's going on. It's free, btw!
