.45acp all the way cant go wrong with that. But before you go out and buy a gun go to a shooting range that teaches courses in safety. Also find a range that lets you rent different types of guns to shoot to decide which one you like best.

Don't use a pistol, use a shotgun (12 Gage). Avoid confrontation if possible. Have a gathering place for your family preferably a bedroom that has a locking door, ensure you can call 911 from inside it. If someone breaks into the house your family should all get to the designated bedroom, you lock the door, call 911 and do not open the door until the 911 operator confirms the person outside the door is a police officer. If anyone tries to come through the door you warn them, and if the warning doesn't work, use the shotgun. If the person trying to get in says they are a cop, tell them to contact the 911 operator and not to come through the door until the operator has confirmed their identity to you.

9mm or a 40 cal. Both are easy to use with low recoil. Depends on your proficiency with firearms. If you are not fairly proficient and practiced with firearms, a 410 shotgun is much better than a pistol. Easy to hit what you want but also low recoil. Also a shotgun will more likely scare an intruder worse making it less likely that you'll have to shoot

I have to agree with #1, there is nothing like a shotgun for home defense.

I agree, 9mm semi-automatic. Take a shooting course, have your spouse take it also. Get used to firing the gun, how it feels, how loud it is, how to aim it and most importantly how to be safe with it. You don't want a situation where you shoot your child because you weren't expecting them home, nor do you want to miss an assailant and be so startled you drop the weapon.

The rule fo thumb is: smaller the person? bigger the gun... it really depends on your living situation and firearms skills/ training. best thing to have is intellegence and a phone to call 911
as moet inexperienced folks wind up shot with their own guns in home invasions~

Agree with first poster SHOT GUN
Just point and shoot
Easy to hit your target.
It's very intimidating
Less likely to go through walls and hit innocent bystanders.

911, just dial the phone. It's less likely to miss. If you really want something faster, I recommend a 9mm.
