In some states you cannot charge by the job if you are not a licensed painter. In some you cannot charge by the hour. You would be well advised to contact someone in your area that could tell you how you can charge. I have lived in several states and have had painting jobs in them all. At todays rate, painting pays quite well. Naturally it all depends on whether you are providing the materials or is the customer providing them? A painter must, of course, charge enough to get back their investment for the materials for which they paid. I always charged an upfront cost before starting a job. The amount would depend on the size of the job and materials. Usually 80% would be my initial upfront charge. That way I was pretty sure of getting paid. If you charge by the job then you would want to determine how long it would take you to do it. Add up the cost for the total number of rooms and go from there. Most people would rather pay per room as it seems they are getting the work for less than if you charged by the hour. By the job is also a more generous seeming manner. By the hour most people feel they are being charged too much. But no matter how you charge you must get your money back for materials if you are paying for them. Above all, honesty in working with people is a must.

You should do some market research in your area. Call different painting companies and find out how they charge and how much. Painters do well where I live. Wishing you all the best...
