As soon as she can sit up, let her at it. Make sure the sand is in a covered sand box though. Some outdoor sand boxes become litter boxes for cats and your baby can end up getting sick from the germs. Bring a camera, you have to catch the expression she makes when she tries to eat the sand. My 3 year old still tries to eat tiny bits of sand. "It just looks so much like sugar" she says after she spits it out.

I live at the beach and sand is everywhere! Sand is not going to hurt your baby. Do make sure it doesn't get in the eyes. I asked the Ped this same question and she laughed and said "think of it as extra fiber". It's another opportunity to let your child explore the world around them.

There's no right age for playing in sand. But figure that if she are able to crawl or feed herself, she is probably ready to have sand, a shovel, and a bucket.

I think around 12months is fine as long as you stay with them. make sure the sand is clean and covered up when you are not using it. in my experience children will only try to eat sand once or twice.

She should be past the stage of putting everything in her mouth. Maybe 16 - 18 months.

If she can sit up on her own and shows an interest, let her play. Just be sure to put sunscreen on her, and a hat.

Make sure that your baby won't get it in their eyes, mouth, etc. Whenever you decide it's a good age to start, make sure you supervise them for awhile.

When she stops putting everything in her mouth, she's ready for a sandbox.
