It is the "Satanic Verses" for which Rushdie received a "fatwa" - kind of death sentence - from Ayatollah Khomeini. Rushdie has escaped the sentence. Now don't ask me who is Ayatollah Khomeini?

To put it in crude and rudimentary terms Satanic Verses was the novel where he quite literally bullshitted, the Muslim religion. Naturally Muslims were not happy and this crazy mullah guy said that we're going to kill the author. So aparently he went into hiding to save himself. Thats the controversy surrounding the book.
As for the book itself... its really not that well written. His other novels are better.

Satanic Verses - The mullahs issued a fatwa for killing him because of this book. He lived in hiding for years because of the controversy about Satanic Verses.

Most of his work is controversial, but it was "The Satanic Verses" that caused the Ayatollah Khomeini to call for his death.
