What is the best Tom Hamks film?

Question

One of those questions that causes arguments down the pub. For me it is a close call, but i would go with 'Big'. What do you think?

Close call but I would have to go with Gump over Saving Private Ryan.

Actually, he's probably one of our most versatile actors, and has been throughout his career. How many other actors have had as prolific and varied a career as he has. None come to my mind.

When he was younger, Big was quite good, and even Bachelor Party was quite funny. And through the years he has raised the bar time and time again - in projects so varied that few others could even make the attempt.

Even his few flops like Ladykillers were at least different or interesting. And the fluff stuff like You've Got Mail, and Sleepless in Seattle were better than average.

Of course Gump his 2nd Oscar winner was great, but it's an allegorical, so his character is impossible to measure accurately. And Philadelphia was such a major tear jerker it's hard to look beyond the melodrama - despite it being his 1st Oscar.

But in my opinion, the ones where he seems to disappear into the role are where he earns his pay.

Green Mile & Saving Private Ryan are cinematic high water marks - but for my money, Road to Perdition is Hanks at his best because it's the one that seems least out of character for him. I think it was his greatest stretch.

I would say Forrest Gump. The first time I watched it, I cried a little bit. I've watched about 30 times now, and when I do watch it, I cry the whole way through - just because I know that sad bits are coming up! I think it is a beautiful film - very well written and so enjoyable to watch. Plus they have great accents in it!
