I have a Dell 4600C with a 2.4 GHz processor and another 4600C with a 2.8 Ghz processor. Could I switch these? The bottoms of the processors are different so I don't know.

No, if the bottoms are different that means they have different numbers of pins. For example, some Pentium 4s are Northwood versions with 478 pins. Other Pentium 4s are Prescott versions and have 775 pins. Also, a lot of OEM manufacturers like Dell use propietary components that limit your ability to upgrade.

You gave the speed but not the type processor. They may be different types, and if the sockets are different forget it.
