I can't remember why the Earth spins by itself, but I think the moon has something to do with why it doesn't spin perpendicular to it's axis.

No one know for sure, but it was either because of the way the earth was formed from the sun's birth or the impacts that followed. The tilt of our axis changes over time as well, kind of like a spinning top that is slowing down and starts to wobble. The moon however stabilizes our rotation a great deal. As to why we are tilted on our axis? Could have been the large moon-forming impact that caused this. Some other planets are tilted even more, like Uranus. Look at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axial_tilt for more on this.

it orbits the sun because of gravitational force which keep it from just going off into space.

Earth spins because of the way it was formed. Our solar system formed about 4.6 billion years ago when a huge cloud of gas and dust started to collapse under its own gravity. As the cloud collapsed, it started to spin. Some of the material within this cloud gathered into swirling eddies and eventually formed into planets. As the planets formed they kept this spinning motion. This is similar to what you see when skaters pull in their arms and spin faster. As material gathered in more closely to form a planet, like Earth, the material spun faster. The Earth keeps on spinning because there are no forces acting to stop it.
