Don't get me wrong. I think that her death is tragic and I'm glad that the murderer may have finally been caught. However, thousands of children are murdered or go missing every year, but their cases aren't well-publicized. What's so special about JonBenet Ramsey (or Natalie Holloway, for that matter)? Are murders and disappearances important only if the victims are rich, white, blonde girls?

I have plenty of compassion for people who have lost their children, but I wouldn't be asking this question if the murders and disappearances of poor and/or minority children were more publicized. Also, I agree that the press owes the Ramsey family a huge apology. Not only did they have to deal with the pain of losing their child, but they were accused of murdering her, which is the worst thing that a person could ever be accused of. I also think it's a pity that JonBenet's mother isn't alive to see what's going on.

I agree with you - rich, white blonde girls who go missing or end up murdered are usually highly publicized - the families can afford to make it so - and it is so sad because those families whose children were murdered and were poor are simply put on the back burner. Yes, this is definitely tragic and a very good question! You make an excellent point.

Alot of these "well pubicized" cases...are not because the police go to the reporters...but because the parents and family talk to them out of frustration. They think things are moving too slowly or not enough is being done. And its then that the bigger stations get involved. Then it snowballs and its all over the nation. The more the family gets publicicity then the more the ratings go up.
I agree that all murders are terrible and should have the same consideration...buts its not always the news that gets it out there. Sad ...yes.....and if the family happens to be well off and supposedly a ransom was ordered then all the more reason for the press to take it and run...Most of the murders that happen are just everyday people like you and I and the press isn't going to waste their time with it.....Its a terrible crime against the families but one that I don't think will ever change.

There are about 20,000 murders in the US each year, each one a tragedy. Where is the intense media coverage of those? And what about this one from late July, buried by the mainstream media on page 42, except in Jihad watch:
SEATTLE – One person has been killed and at least five others have been injured in a shooting at the Jewish Federation at 2031 Third Ave. in downtown Seattle. One [Muslim] suspect has been taken into custody...

I'm with you on the publicty issue, what makes these kids so damn special? If I went missing tomorrow, would my face be plastered on every tabloid, television screen and billboard in Michigan? Don't think so.
Personally, I've hated hearing about it since it happened in '96, and I was just a kid back then. I didn't give a damn about some poor little dead beauty queen back then and I really don't give a damn now. She's dead and theres nothing to be done about it. GIVE IT UP.
Really, I've always wondered what made those rich, white kids so special. I mean, I hear more about Paris Hilton and Jonbenet Ramsey than I do about what actually matters in my world, and people wonder why I never watch the news. The regular news broadcast is so full of fillers and fluff, I swear they just plan out what they want to broadcast and then mix in current events for a taste of reality.
I guess it's true, you have to be some pretty, rich, white girl to get a little damn attention when you die.

No. Your not. I was sick of it 9 years ago. Its all people would talk about in Denver for years.
If those people would not have been rich, you would not be hearing so much about it. The media basically persecuted those people, I have not heard any of them apologize. Have you?

You have to realize that it could've been you or one of your family members. When news coverage give information to us like that, it not only tells us what's going on, but it also serves as a protection. It shows you what you need to do in order to protect yourself. You need to think before you speak.

Gosh your heartless. If you're sick of any news story just change the channel. I don't limit my compassion to just those I see in the popular media.
