The themes in "The Odyssey" have been successfully replayed in modern culture (the latest one that comes to mind being "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?")

You do whatever you have to for family.

To me, the book is about persistance. Odysseus never gave up on his dream/goal of returning home and even after the death of his crew, the nearly impossible tasks he had to accomplish to continue on, and the intervention of the gods themselves. Basically, it is a story that affirms the point that you can do anything that you set your mind to.

there is no significance
it was a stupid book about some player that went to war, spent 7 years on an island w/ another woman while his wife was pretty much being raped and his son was searching for him.
no wonder the gods hated him

Family... and fulfilling one's destiny... the connection between the past and the future generations (Odysseus, his father and his son), fidelity... a whole lot of things that are still important in a man's life... Have you read it at all?
