How do film-makers make newborn babies so life-like or "real" looking in films? I've noticed that in recent films that women will give birth and that the baby is shown with the umbilical cord and all, how do film-makers do this, special effects?

It isn't that new for reality. About 35 years ago, there was a film called "helga" where the woman actually gave birth on screen. There have been several since. For a while it was popular to show different birthing techniques in documentary films. Those were real births, with real medical professionals waiting out of sight in case of problems.

But it is generally easier to show a newborn with special effects or makeup due to union rules.

In the films that I've seen made, they make a very realistic doll, or model that they create in a sophisticated "creature special effects" type lab. They can program the baby to squirm, open eyes, mouth, everything.

Then, makeup comes in with this gooey syrup that looks just like placenta and blood... add in some baby sound fx and background music... and voila! a newborn.

Hope that helps.

I've sure alot of it is Computer Graphics & Special FX. They can make almost anything look real now a days.

They obviously do so by animation or by training some cute, sweet-looking babies. As such training babies isn't a hard job. Babies are good learners.
