Guys can and do say the same thing about girls. Plus how many peoples profiles are true. Personally I would like to at least know if the person is male or female before I talk to them, but that's me.
Usually different questions come up depending on if it is a guy or girl.
Why do girls start IM conversations asking ASL?

You will learn this as you get older - Many men are lazy. Clicking to see your profile is too much work for them. They ask for your asl because they are too lazy to talk to someone who doesn't meet their criteria.

Well that's odd.When ever I've been in chat I've never asked for asl but I can't tell you the times girls have asked me that.So maybe it's not just the guys.

Either they are trolling for information they can use to commit identity theft, are looking for someone to have sex with, are immature, or usually are boors and have nothing else to say.
I ignore anyone who asks me that question and give my standard line. older than dirt/no thanks/earth last time I checked. ha!
