The mind would be my first answer BUT if that doesn't apply... I would go with religion. It has screwed up more of you humans on this planet than ANY other thing in history! It has taken more lives, ruined more civilizations and caused more hate/discontent than anything we've ever known.
This is why I laugh my A$$ off at you religious people on here. So many sit there saying God did this, God did that and you have no more proof than a scientists point of view and YET you think you're right... how arrogant is that?
Religion is the root of nmost of the problems on this planet... and it's not just the middle east!

If you mean by thing as in an inanimate object I'd have to say money. It can make people do things even if they're injustice. It can buy power. Practically everyone wants a huge amount of it. Some even call it the roots of all evil.

I think in America the most powerful things are selfishness, then other things like love and money which makes a selfish person feel even better about himself.
