Whats the deal?

The official AIM client for Mac has been neglected and all but discontinued. You're much better off using iChat (built into Mac OS X and connects to AIM) or Adium (if you're willing to try something a little more advanced).

Hi there...some versions of AIM doesn't work well with Tiger. Consider experimenting by either downloading an updated version (http://www.aim.com) or if you are using a current version then try an older one just to see if you have an incompatibility issue. Another user mentioned Adium. This is also a wonderful chat application and it's also capable allowing chats with Yahoo, Google, ICQ, MSN, AOL, AIM, etc. You have the best of all worlds with just using one application. I don't believe AIM is 100% compatible with Mac. I have OSX Tiger also and all it does it kick me out about every 15 minutes. I did call Apple and they said it was maybe a connection problem......Nope not that.

I would totally recommend you try out Adium. It is an excellent chat client and will allow you to not only use AIM, but also the MSN and YIM networks at the same time.

And it is amazingly customizable!
