Yesterday someone told me that was not a good idea. But I'm getting almost 40g of the 60g that I need daily. Any thoughts on this?

Eat the meat. You are still not getting all of what you need.

I am a vegetarian and have two healthy vegetarian children. You do not have to eat meat in pregnancy to be healthy. You do have to make sure you get enough protein, all the right vitamins, minerals, etc. As others have said, definitely see your doctor and/or a nutritionist. The protein bars are a step above junk food, so you don't want to consume them too much. Tofu is an excellent source of protein. The thing to remember with it is that it has texture, but not flavor and takes on the flavor of whatever it is cooked with. There are lots of recipies on the web if you search for them. A meat substitute product that I loved while pregnant because it has lots of protein and tastes yummy is the Veat brand "fish." I am not associated with this company in any way. I am just a consumer who likes their product. If you live an a rural area, you may have to get your closest health food store or grocery store to special order it for you, but it is worth it. Please do not feel that you have to eat any kind of meat for you or your baby to be healthy. I have been a vegetarian for 20 years and am super healthy as are my two girls who are one and six.

Find natural foods that have the nutrients that you are missing from not eating meat and eat those instead. The vitamins in artificially made products can never be absorbed the same way as the ones in mother nature. How about eating broccoli and spinach for the iron, low fat cheese and yougurt for the protein, soy and lentils, and so on...

PS- I dont think that the preservatives on processed stuff are good for your baby's health. My OBG did not even let me eat hot dogs during my pregnancy because of the nitrates. Read the labels and find out what those long words like "monosodium glutamate" mean. Guarantee you preservatives are not good during pregnancy. Talk to your DOC ASAP!!

When it comes to your body and your baby - don't listen to us on here! Ask your doctor and/or get a referral to a nutritionist. Too much or too little of anything can be harmful.

Don't wait til your next appointment either - that's why the Dr.'s there - to help you! So give them a call.

I'm 7 1/2 months pregnant and my husband eats 1 bar a day as part of his workout regiment. My doctor told me not to eat them. I had to discuss my diet with my doctor in the beginning because I was paranoid about it (just because). But I ehad to change the amount of herbal stuff I had (including switcing to decaf teas). You never know what she'll say unless you ask - and don't wait.

I love red meat but was so turned off by it while I was pregnant. It is important to have protein in your diet but there are so many other things that have protein in it as listed above. Chicken, fish, tofu, nuts, pork, eggs.

The one thing is red meat is also a good source of iron which is very important during your pregnancy (speaking as an anaemic)
so make sure your supplementing your diet with foods high in iron, dark green leafy vegetables like spinach.

good luck & take care of yourself.

If you want a better source of protein: soy. Try tofu. Tofu is loaded with protein. Put a little soy sauce, and voila. No longer quite so bland. In Japan, there's a great dish called maburudofu (Marble Tofu?) that has a kind of spicy red sauce, with vegetables and tofu. It's really good. Look into it.

You don't need to eat red meat for protein---chicken and fish have mega protein too, and eggs and dairy.
You should get as much of your protein from food sources, as that is what is best absorbed by the body.
