By not looking at it personally. You have to take your emotions, feelings and opinions out of the equation and look at it from a completely non-biased viewpoint. Basically, you have to be honest.

Sometimes it's hard to do that, especially when the subject is something really important to you or is really emotionally trying. One way that always works for me is when I first have to be critical about something, I close my eyes and take a deep breath and conciously acknowledge that while I do care about this subject, I must make a fair and critical judgement about it. By acknowledging my feelings and then reaffirming my goal to be critical, I am able to confidently learn the facts of a situation. It takes practice, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy.
