For me it was a little Disney film called "Watcher in the Woods." I remember being 6 or 7 and seeing it for the first time at the local theater. Even now, some 25 years later, I still get chills when I watch it.
2nd choice would have to be the Exorcist.

When I was young, The Evil Dead really really scared me, but not at all anymore--although I still love it! I am a HUGE horror movie fan, and The Ring scared me, but didn't keep me up at night. The Shining, however, with those f**king TWINS!! Those little brats really still scare me for some reason. I've even looked online to see what they look like now, but I couldn't find them. Dammit. They're probably realllllll ugly.

I find the movies that mess with your mind more scary than those that are just bloody and gross. Therefore I rate "The Shining" at number one, followed very closely in 2nd place by, "The Hills Have Eyes." One could make an argument for the movie, "Carrie," but there was really ony one small scene that was chilling.

The Exorcist for me - saw it when it was originally released in a huge old fashioned theater in downtown Toronto when they still had balcony's. Line up was 4 blocks long and they had food vendors selling to the people in line. Got in the theater and its the only show I've ever been to that they actually had Lysol spray around (because people were vomiting in the theater) and smelling salts (cause they were passing out). My friends and I went to find a seat in the lower area of the theater and while waiting another couple came down by us and their comment was *we are not going to sit by them because they have candy are are going to throw up* lol
But still - seeing it a packed theater in the 70's sent shivers down the spine because it was the unknown - not a slice and dice em kind of film - but the unknown type of film - thats what was scarey.
