YES! I breastfed for 10 months. My doctor told me to take benadryl when I broke out in hives. It is fine. Keep in mind that the baby will take in a small amount of it, and it may make him sleepy. Also, make sure your wife drinks EXTRA water as benadryl can reduce the milk supply... Make sure she drinks a lot of fluids and it should be fine.

It is ABSOLUTELY fine. Most over the counter meds are safe to take while nursing, as long as you follow the recommended dosage schedule. (she shouldn't take more than the recommended dose). My pediatrician told me to give my 3 month old benadril for bug bites, so if it is fine for a baby to take, than it is fine for a breastfeeding mom to take (the amount excreted in breastmilk is FAR less than the amount given directly to the baby to treat a bug bite). You will not harm the baby. There is no reason for your wife to suffer unnecessarily. Bad advice, like some of the people saying she can't take it, puts more burdens on nursing mothers than is necessary, which causes many women to quit nursing, sadly. Tell her to take the benadril!

Everything you take into your body, even enhailing smoke is transford into your blood stream as well as your breast milk. You should not take any medication that has psudoephedrin in it. You can find different types of decongestents that dont have the harmful things in it. Most doctors will tell you to look at the tylenol brand of products they are the most safe for you and for baby. Benadryl is usually mild though and shouldnt hurt the baby any. I suggest you get a number for your local la lache leauge. They are a great group of women and a non profit organazition. Its basicly a help line for breastfeeding women. They can answer most any quistion you have. If you care to email me I can give you more information about them and breast feeding. I have a library of books because I had planned on being a lactation specialist.

Yes, it is perfectly safe. My doctor recommended Benadryl to me for my allergies (while pregnant and nursing in place of Rx medication) and it was on a list of medicines my doctor gave me when I first became pregnant under the "safe to take" heading. Your wife can still call her doctor to ease both of your minds (and it's always a good idea to put in a call to the doctor if you have a question like this anyway) but if she's really suffering right now and you can't wait for a response I would say get her a Benadryl and a glass of water!

From what I've read (see my sources) it seems that a non-sedating antihistamine (Allegra?) might be a better bet.

While you CAN (and probably should) ask your doctor about this, be aware that most doctors actually know very little about what drugs are safe to use while breastfeeding. LactMed and Hales are the standard sources, and anyone can check them.

Heck, you can take anything you want, since it's your wife doing the breastfeeding! Knock yourself out!

for you, yes. For her, unfortunately no. Benadril is a downer and while it might make the baby nice and sleepy, I don't think it's a good idea.

Benadryl does pass into the breast milk and your wife shouldn't take it. There is not much she can do. All the antihistamines pass into the breast milk.

She should really ask her doctor, I've have always heard that what you put in your body is transferred to the baby via the breast milk.

For you or for her to take the medicine? If it's her, she should contact her doctor, as every person is different.
