Oops, seems like you're running a bit late. Or maybe your timing is just right as things are just unfolding... But "for the masses" I bet it's still mostly unrealistic. In any case, it's good to be informed and start the necessary preparations ;)

it truly is "pushing" against the mass interior the thrusters. That mass is going one route, the deliver is going in the different. actually, throwing bowling balls out the back of the spaceship might want to get you to flow in area only to boot, even if that would not be as sensible, as your flow from this custom relies upon on the mass of the deliver, the mass of the "bowling ball" and the speed of that you toss that bowling ball. you could attempt this attempt sometime once you've more beneficial effectual stability than I do. Get on a skateboard (or curler skates, curler blades, something similar). be particular you're immobile, and %. up and throw a baseball ahead. You *ought to* roll backwards a touch (it truly is a *always* roll if there have been no environment or friction with the floor, yet nevertheless a really sluggish one). Now attempt throwing that similar baseball speedier. You roll backwards a touch speedier. attempt different massed products and different throwing velocities. you at the prompt are not shifting that a lot from pushing the air, you're shifting that a lot via pushing the mass that became once connected to you interior the option route of your required go back and forth (assuming you wanted to roll backwards).

There is going to have to be a pretty good reason for a lot of people to travel in space before it becomes affordable for anyone but the very rich. If for example it became more feasible to have manufacturing done on stations in orbit or on the moon, you would start to see commuter service from earth to those destinations and back.

As demand grew technology would improve and allow for less expensive travel.

It would be great if that would happen, but I'm not holding my breath.

Commercial flights to space are a huge waste of energy. We should establish a colony on the moon, breed the next space generation there and move to the asteroids and do the same thing, always moving out.

Suborbital flights should start in a couple of years. I hope cheap(er) orbital flight will follow, but don't count on it any time soon. Expensive orbital flight is already here, with several people visiting the space station for $20 million.

There are a few companies working on that project right now. You should be able to find them on the web. Some were competing for the X prize, I believe. Try www.xprize.org

I hope you are young and have time to wait, or extremely rich.
You can go now with NASA, for a few million dollars.
For the cheap flights, you'll have to wait..

I would guess within ten years we'll see suborbital flights. I'm sure they'll be pricy, though.
