I work for a lab and I have the best job. My boss is amazing and the people I work with are the best. I am a team lead and work directly under my boss. I have been there eight years and know the job like the back of my hand. There is a supervisor position open an hour away from me. It would mean a $2 raise but tons of travel. I have a two year old and a boyfriend who doesnt have a license so they rely on me taking them to and from work and daycare. This would cause some trouble but it is workable. The job site is a mess and means tons of work for me but I know I can do it. Do I stay at the job I am at or go for the challenge? The only thing I would gain is a couple dollars and the title but it would be much more work. But I am bored with my job now and I already do stuff that is not in my job description just to keep busy. Any advice would help. Thanks

To be challenged is important to anyone. If you don't feel you are being challenged enough at your present job the you should consider changing jobs.

There's got to be a better alternative for your job boredom than the alternative you have mentioned. In fact, I don't see any positives.
Since you get along so well with your boss, simply approach him/her, and explain that you would like additional and more varied responsibilities. In such a positive job environment, I'd think you could mutually work out a more satisfying position/job description. I'd also figure that you could anticipate at least an increase in pay that would rival that other alternative.
Good luck.

It looks to me like you are looking for someone else's avail for a choice that is clear...

The quality of your life is what you work for: to be able to afford a better life for yourself and your family. If the new job does not offer much in money, but would make hell of your lifestyle, it is a no-no!!!

How about talking to your boss about this perspective, and let him know that you would be happing to have bigger opportunities quite fast... that you don't want to leave because you like working with him, but that you would want a career perspective. HR department may also help you, and you may consider some extra training if you think this would help.

If you have a good relationship with him, he will welcome the talk, and help you. you may gain on both fronts.

Stay, something closer and better will come along. Its not worth the hassles to not be there for your child. Children grow up so fast now days, always put family first.
