A fart is a fart. When your expell gas build up, its still the same if you hear it or not. A normal body function.

i see what you're trying to get at. the old tree falling in the woods thing. here's a better way to put it----
if you fart whilst sleeping, does it really smell?

Yes. Get a tape recorder with voice activation and a sensitive mic and put it on record while you're sleeping.
I've done this to prove to myself that I talk in my sleep too.

Well I hear it when my husband does that. I am sure the change in methane levels would be detectable enough to prove the act.
