It is pointless fear/hate! Who are others to decide who we can or cannot love?

Does it exist? Absolutely, and for some reason it seems to be much more prevalent on Yahoo Answers than in 'real life'

Suppose it's very easy for these people to hurl abuse through a fairly anonymous forum, whereas if they passed a gay couple on the street holding hands, much as their tiny minds might be exploding with rage at such an 'offensive' scene, they'd probably walk by without saying a word. And then go home and burn their eyes out with a poker in case they caught 'gay'.

You say 'who are others to decide who we can or cannot love?'

The problem with a lot of the bigots on here is that they don't claim it as their decision. It's GOD that thinks you're a dirty perverted sicko..... They're just passing on the message!

My favourite jerk is Larry_S. No doubt he'll reply to your question with his boring boring cut n pasted passage about how you need to repent. He's read the Bible selectively I feel. He's quite willing to point out the mote in your eye without checking for the whopping great big beam in his.

And as long as you live in a free democratic society, these narrow minded extreme loonies aren't the ones who make the decision about who you love.

That my friend, thankfully, is down to you! YAY! (Wish I had a rainbow flag to wave at the Yahoo Answers anti-gay brigade)! xxx

People will say, "I'm not homophobic! I just hate F*GS!" What they don't realize, is that anger and hate are FEAR BASED EMOTIONS.

What people don't understand, they fear. What they fear, they hate.

Equal status was given to minorities in the US a few decades ago. African Americans have ALL the legal protections that the majority has. Regardless of that, bigotry still exists. And it always will. Fortunately to a lesser degree than in decades past, but it still exists.

Once the GLBT population garners ALL of the same rights that every other person has, there will still be fear (hatred). On a brighter note -- and this can be seen with particular reference to African Americans and other minorities -- as the old bigots and hate-mongers die off, a little bit of bigotry goes to the grave with them. And it will continue until these OLD hate-filled men and women are all gone.

There is a new and more embracing and understanding generation taking their places. Soon, all of the lawmakers will understanding and fair minded people, but those are just the lawmakers. Average, ignorant and hate-filled/ fear-filled people will remain. We can only hope that their fear and hatred will be drowned out by those who are more compassionate and understanding.

It's been said, and the saying is ringing true each and every time the phrase is uttered: "Gays are the new Blacks".

Sadly, as long there are living, breathing humans on the planet, there will be those that will always hate (fear) that which they don't understand ... or WANT to understand. That's just one of the many foibles of being human.

Best Wishes!

Homophobia exists because there is still hate. People are afraid of those things they can not relate to. They feel it is better to push it away than to embrace it.

Others its a way of trying to live someone's life. They think they can tell them how to think, what to believe, and when those people don't follow what they believe, they rebel against it.

Why does homosexuals still exist? Why does racism still exist?
Why does sexism still exist? Because some people think it's disgusting and wrong. Some people think it's a mental illness, and they chose not to hang around crazy folk. Just think......How do you guys reproduce? Now something tells me something, their. That's what people mean when they say it's not normal, because they find it hard to keep a straight face, when it comes down to 2 people having sex of the same sex. I don't care about you guys, hopefully my child won't come up mentally ill!

There are a lot of factors. The political right, and the Christian Conservative Right have held homosexuality up as a sinful, wilful choice so that they can have something to scare people into submission with.

Our culture is still largely male dominated. There is a subconcious thought that if two males could have sex, then one of them is not dominant, and it wrecks the engrained theory that male is dominant and female is submissive. This is why the acceptance of homosexuality has grown, and the role of women in our society has grown closer to being equal to that of males.

It is a fear of something that they dont understand -
Religious nuts think that it is *unnatural*
and closet gays over procrastinate to hide their true colours.
Whatever the reason, unfortunately no amount of educating these people wil make them change their opinions, it is more important to teach the younger generations that someones sexuality, much like their skin colour or religion is not a basis to judge people on.

Because people are afraid of what they don't understand. Look at how black people used to be treated back in the day. Homophobia is modern day segregation in a sense. I wont be at all shocked if they have "gays only" bathrooms some day.

Same reason that religion still exists. People are stupid and find something to irrationaly cling to without actually thinking about it.

If people rationally and deeply thought about things they'd see religion is pointless and and there is nothing wrong with homosexuality.
