Electricity!

There is a lot of "light pollution" in the developed world, all the home lights and street lights and so on that stay on all through the night.

If you have the opportunity to look at the night sky a looong way from any civilization (Australian outback, Tannu Tuva, or Arizona for example), you will notice hundreds more stars.

I don't know but I was wondering the same thing.
When I was a kid the nights were deep velvety blue and clear. But a few years ago the sky ,was like, very light, even at three in the morning,it was light blue and I could see very well.It wasn't daylight, but itwas a very LIGHT NITE,and it persists on and off.Might be El Nino.

Urban sprawl.

People are moving further and further away from bigger cities. When they do, they bring house lights, street lights, the corner store lights, new grocery stores lights, etc, etc. More lights dilute the darkness.
