the doc said to start baby on chicken and fish, but even though I puree the boiled meats they tend to be a wee bit stringy and that makes my 8 month old gag. I want to start finger foods too but with this gag reflex I am wondering how to get to the stage of lumpy/chinky food first. She hasnt gotten a tooth yet, so I make sure everything is smooth but still she almost throws up, sad part is sometimes she actually likes what she is eating but the stringiness bugs her. What do you other moms do differently?

sorry forgot to mention - she has already been on purred veggies and fruits since she was 6 months and before that mashed banana and little bit rice cereal for her to sleep. the doc added meat coz baby did so well with all veggies and fruits.

I have 4 kids. The best thing to do when it to all food is to start with YOUR fave food that you had in the last three or two months of being preg. Then, like my first child; take pureed meat and alittle bit of breast milk or formula. Then squish threw a coffee filter of tea strain or sieve. Then kind of "hide" it between your baby's fave foods in a "food bottle" that you can find at Wal-mart, K-mart, Target, or Baby'r'Us. And when you start this use 1 -2 baby spoonfulls at a time. P.S. My sec. preg. was twins; homemade meats take about 2 -3 min. longer to make.

You should be starting your baby with vegetables and fruit first. If she is 8 months old, she should still be nursing or on formula, and is getting all the iron that she needs from that. I don't know why your doctor suggested starting with chicken and fish.. meat should be the last thing tried.. due to all the things you just mentioned.

Start her with pureed carrots, peas, sweet potatoe.. and then try fruit.

With regards to meat, I never boiled it. I baked it with a little water and chopped it up very fine.. then I blended it with some of the water that I baked it with. No stringiness, the water adds the right consistency to it to prevent gagging. Try that.

are you saying you don't use jar food? if you are worried about the quality check out the ingrediants. there are no preservative in them. anyway they work in stages - 1,2 and 3. 1 is textureless. 2 has a little bit of chunky-ness to it so they get used to the feel in there mouth and more of a biting reflex. 3 is pretty chunky but by now they are getting the hang of it. try stage 2 foods for now and mix your meats with veggies. they are extremely bland and gross by themselves. they even sell some meats and veggies already mixed. seriously though - if all of american's foods were made as purely as baby foods we would be better off!!

Good luck with the meat my 6 month old won't touch the stuff (admittedly I tried prepared baby food) on it's own but will eat the meals like chicken with veggies. My son, now 21 months wouldn't eat meat on it's own until well after his first birthday.

make it really thin by adding formula or breastmilk into her food.

remember to go slowly, to see if she has any allergies 3-4 days between new foods.

If she likes rice baby add the veggies first, then try meats, then fruits.

options:

1) jarred meat food which is usually a mixture of meat + meat gravy; smooth in texture with no lumps.
2) give her chicken/turkey/beef/fish BROTH instead of pureeing the meat itself; should be just as nutritious.

good luck!
